So…Banana Cream Pie. Don’t think I have ever eaten it. I know, right? Where’ve I been?
I don’t know.
Don’t get me wrong…I like bananas. Sort of. I’ll eat them…they just aren’t my favorite fruit. They get icky too fast. For me, they have to be perfectly yellow, no brown, no green. So that gives me, oh, about a 42 minute window to consume them once they hit perfection.
Granted, I am usually doing something else when those 42 minutes occur. It happens.
But Banana Cream Pie was our challenge for this week’s Tuesdays With Dorie, chosen by Amy of Sing for Your Supper…so I had to make it.
I wasn’t sure about it, but I gave it a go. Main reason being, I don’t like to miss TWD. I don’t get report cards anymore and that’s kind of a bummer…so getting comments is kind of like my own little report card. I like report cards.
Second reason being I just knew I had Dorie’s crust in my freezer. Knew it. So I pulled out the Ziploc, waited for it to defrost….
and it was sugar cookie dough.
No worries, though. I just smooshed it into some tart pans and went with it. Believe it or not, it worked pretty good and had a nice flavor with the bananas and cream. Like so many other commenters on the TWD site, I, too, ended up with my cream getting thick at lighning speed. I mean, one second I am all like – man, I should just go mow the yard as this cream thickens, it’s only an acre. But then I turn around and it’s thicker than flies in heat. So I had thick cream. It tasted good though. I’ll admit that I didn’t use the entire amount of cinnamon and nutmeg…those two are a little strong for me and remind me too much of Christmas. I like the way this tasted using only about half of the recommended recipe. Everything else I kept as Dorie suggests. Oh – you’ll also note that I used some Baby Red Bananas. These were tasty little boogers. I wish the grocery had them all the time, but here’s what really happened…our Food Lion got them by accident. Red Bananas in Giles County, Virginia equals Scary. Yellow equals Normal. Red equals Devil. I imagine I will not be showcasing other Baby Red Banana Recipes anytime soon. Just so you know.
You should scoot off and see how everyone else fared this week – from what I could gather, this recipe was a first for lots of Dorie Bakers!
But before you go, the moment you have all been waiting for…another giveaway!
This one is a doozy, folks.

Etsy Artist Shauna of The Way We Wear is allowing me to give away one of her FABULOUS Vintage Style Aprons. She sent me the Pinafore – and I just can’t tell you how gorgeous it is. Her craftsmanship is superb – she takes the details to a whole other level! I can hardly bring myself to wear it for fear of getting something on it…so now it is my dressy uppy apron. You know, for company. Because aprons are the bomb and everyone should have one. There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not in my apron. Maybe you are like that to. (if you aren’t you should be. Aprons rock.) I’ve even worn mine to the store before, but that was on accident. I just didn’t notice. (Of course, I also got almost to my car the other day wearing pink fuzzy slippers, but that’s beside the point.) What I am trying to say is – If you don’t have an apron or you are in the market for a newer one – get one of these. You will not be disappointed. She even does a frilly little stitch on all of the trim. No kidding! It’s too cute.
So what do you need to do to win one of your very own?
First, head over to The Way We Wear.
Pick one out. (Heck, pick 2 or 3, but you can only win ONE.)
Come back here and tell me which one you LOVE.
For an extra chance to win, link to this post on your own blog.
For another extra chance to win – Tweet It!
Just make sure for each of these things you do you come back here and leave a separate comment, okay? Winner will be chosen at Random on April 15, and announced on the 16th.
Can’t wait? Have to have one NOW? Goodie for you! Here’s a code that will get you a 15% refund – TWWW15. All you do is order, and once you pay in full the regular amount, plug in this code and Shauna will refund you the 15%. That’s the only way we can do it with Etsy! (But hey, it works…and these aprons are to die for!!)
Good luck everyone!

You get an A+ from me!
Your pie looks yummy!!!
I don’t like banana cream pie – or banana pudding, or much of any banana dessert, really – but that hasn’t stopped your slice from looking delicious. (especially the whipped cream -yum!)
I really like the 1950s Sweetheart Petal apron (Arts Crafts Floral Border). I like the Linen Optic Blossom of the same style, but I think the first one would be a little more “me.”
Also tweeted the giveaway and am now following you.
Kate
Those little pies look great. I am not a banana fan…so I made something different. But I bet my boys would gobble yours up!
Also checked out the aprons…love the flapper style with the Zesty Zinnia fabric. I am becoming addicted to aprons. Starting to make my own!
Take care,
Tania
Off to Twitter the giveaway!!!
Thanks for the opportunity to win something…I never win!
Tania
I used the baby red bananas, too! They had them at Harris Teeter in Pentagon City … maybe something about Virginia and red bananas right now???Hmmm… The pie looks AWESOME! This was my first banana cream pie too!
My favorite apron is the 1950s Sweetheart Petal Apron – Vintage Reproduction!!! Supser cute!
I love your pie in tart form – so cute! Sugar cookie dough as the pie crust sounds phenomenal, I need to try that!
Great looking pie. I’m quite the opposite, I NEED a banana a day or I just don’t feel right. I’ve gone bananas. Your pie looks great. Love the sugar cookie crust!
As for the aprons–they are so cute! I really like the black apron with white bows on the pockets. But if I was to really pick a favorite from the site, I love the black/red/white pot holder and oven mitt. I need new oven mitts in a bad way!
Having a yummy giveaway on my blog, check it out. Ends Friday the 10th.
First, I love your blog design. Would you tell me who you used? And if it was you, then would you do one for me?
And never mind the pie, I am waiting for your doughnut recipe. The Krispy Kremes here are slowly closing down. I need my fix!
Your pie looks fabulous! A sugar cookie crust sounds wonderful!
You get a gold star from me too.
I love getting comments.
Your pie looks fabulous.
I’m the same way with bananas — there’s a tiny window when they’re just ripe enough to have no green, but not so ripe they have any black flecks. Gorgeous photo, and it’s fun to know that sugar cookie dough works, too!
I love your new blog design. I love the red bananas. I love the apron you chose to display! Love love love.
It’s true, a banana cream pie has to be done well in order to be good–I absolutely love your idea of the mini pies!
For the Apron–LOVE the red and white polka dot flapper apron. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=22748436
I agree with everything in this post! Bananas are good, but overripe/underripe bananas are baaaad. And I think these sound delish with a cookie crust.
All of those aprons are SO CUTE. It was really hard to choose a favorite! But I totally love the 1920s Flapper Apron, so I guess that’ll be me fave.
Thanks for the fun giveaway!
MMMM Sugar cookie crust…. drool.
I really like the Chocolate Pink Flappers Apron, very cute1
OMG – this looks amazing!! Great pictures!!
) Thanks for baking with me this week!
(btw- I’m lovin’ that Chocolate Pink Flapper Apron…

My favorite apron is the one you’ve posted above. I love the thick straps! You’re pie looks amazing, definitely looking forward to trying that out!
i created my first twitter account for this! i hope i tweeted correctly! i love the optic one you posted!
I’m like you Susan. I will eat a banana, but only in that tiny window. I love the 1920′s flapper aprons, especially the Zesty Zinnia black one. But, they are all darling!
I love the 1920 Flapper apron (black, red and white) and the 1950 sweetheart petal apron!
The 1920′s Flapper apron- Zesty Zinnia in Black, is very pretty.
Ciao ! I love the petal apron but don’t worry I’m too far away ! Sadly too far to get any super banana cream pie leftover !
If I had to choose one, I would go with the Zesty Zinnia Black one. So cute!
Sugar cookie dough was a great accidental substitution. I bet it tasted wonderful.
Sugar cookie dough sounds wonderful. Your pie looks yummy.
Your pie looks delicious! Even though you didn’t intend to use the sugar cookie dough, I bet it tasted great! I love your blog! And I also love the 1950′s Petal apron with the Crafty Mod Floral Border.
I love that you made this pie with the sugar cookie dough. That sounds totally fabulous!!
The pie looks wonderful, and I almost used the sugar crust myself. I totally agree on the spices – too Christmasy, and not quite right with the bananas.
I hardly ever catch the bananas when they are just right!
I like the apron in the photo, or the red, black and white one!
The pie looks delicious!!!
I love the 1950s Hostess Petal Apron in Chocolate Blue, but also like the 1950s Sweetheart Petal April (Linen optic).
I read on twitter that you were using a sugar cookie crust and I was excited to hear how it turned out! Nice! The little pies look delicious. Cute giveaway, too!
I’m with you… bananas have a short “optimum” life span. That’s why I love banana ice cream.
The aprons are adorable and I love the historical bent. My favorite is the 50s petal apron with the floral border. Vintage without being too girlie.
I give you an A+! Your pie looks great! I’m the same with bananas. They have to be perfectly yellow. I’m off to pick an apron….
I’m back. I like the:
1950s Hostess Petal Apron with Oven Mitt Potholder set – Vintage Reproduction (Pink Chocolate Damask)
Thanks for the opprotunity to win! And for turning me on to the apron site.
I don’t think it is possible to choose only one. Those are so awesome. I love the one on the first page of the website or this super girly one 1950s Hostess Petal Apron – Vintage Reproduction (Pink with White Polka Dots) WOMANS SM/MED. I too love my apron. When I put it on I feel like I am dressing up to get busy in the kitchen. I love it!
