In the midst of all this snowing, I took myself to Walmart. It had to be done – I needed supplies. Like, 160 ounces of Cream Cheese, for example. Yes, I needed it. I mean, you don’t think I would just go to Walmart and buy 10 pounds of random dairy product, do you? So anyway, after I am finished buying the Philly, 2 floodlamps, a paint scraper, 60 eggs, some candy, ribbon and a box of Poptarts? I hit the RedBox.
Have you tried RedBox yet? Freaking awesome. You can rent any movie in that sucker for a buck a day, and there’s no chick there to squidge her pierced nose up at you for your decision to rent the remake of Ice Castles.
You heard me right…the remake of Ice Castles.
I may perhaps be the only person in America who will own up to having seen the old version more than 6 times. Was it a great movie? No. In fact, that blonde skater girl in the original kind of creeped me out, even before her blindness. But that’s beside the point.
It was remade.
Granted, this new version I did like better than the original. And I am a fool for any ice skating movie. DB Sweeney anyone? I’d watch him figure skate everyday if it were an option, which luckily for my husband, it’s not. So I’ll just catch him on TNT from time to time when The Cutting Edge is on a marathon. Which is rarely, and I can’t seem to figure out why.
So, what is my point? Do I have one, even?
I do. Yes, I think I do.
Hollywood is FULL of movie writers, or screenwriters or whatever they go by these days. Full of ‘em. And here we have a remake of a subpar 1970’s chick flick about a blind skater. You can not tell me that someone out there had no better idea. No one? In the whole town?
You wanna know what’s worse than that??
They are remaking Footloose. Footloose!! Sacrilege! Kevin Bacon isn’t even dead yet! This concept blows my mind. Footloose is a classic. Not a “Gone With The Wind” classic, but a classic for my generation. Like 16 Candles and The Breakfast Club. Why would you even consider remaking such an iconic movie? Were there not enough twinkly lights in the original? Not enough sex? Are you still placing it in a town that has outlawed (gasp) dancing? And everyone in the whole town apparently goes to the exact same church? Will Ariel still get punched by her flannel wearing ex-beau and then not get locked up for abuse? Will Williard and Wren still have secret dance practices on the football field? Maybe I shouldn’t talk about Footloose anymore. It’s starting to sound weird.
Lord knows if they are remaking Footloose, nothing is sacred. And if I hear that The Goonies is being remade…I’m out. As in, OUT to LA to stage a march or something. A sit in. A protest rally. A picket line. Of course, it may just be me with a piece of posterboard sitting outside the Chinese Theater eating hotdogs, but, hey, its the thought that counts.
And right now, the movie industry could use a little more thought.
Hollywood, you should be ashamed.
Until next time folks, thanks for dropping by! And, if you haven’t already – go check out the Le Creuset giveaway on my home page. It’s going on until Sunday night, so go!
As for me, I’m going back to Ice Castles.

It’s terrible and I am with you on The Goonies. I have 10yr old twins and they love the original. I mean they sit down with popcorn, candy and stare at the tv until its over.
Nothing is sacred to these people. Ill march right along with you to L.A. and beat somebody’s behind.
The Goonies is right up there with my top favorite movies of all time. It is always close at hand (have in VHS & DVD just in case it isn’t on TV somewhere!) and Seven at two years old already loves it. Glad to know I won’t be alone in my picket line. Thanks!
Love DB Sweeney! I watched that movie over and over. Toe pick!
“Toepick” – I love that movie & DB Sweeney! Red Box is fantastic and it is open at all hours!! Thanks for the code. Now I can rent my chick flicks for free
I am horrified by the remake of Alice in Wonderland – have you seen those commercials?! Sooo scary. The other remake I didn’t like was Parent Trap – I like the Haley Mills version better!! Have fun with your Philly!
Hey Lauren…I totally agree with the Alice in Wonderland comment. Too SCARY. It was scary enough in cartoon form. Add a freaky looking Depp and you’ve got yourself another nightmare. He’s a great actor, but man, this is too much. I also dislike the newer Parent Trap, though I could watch the old one over and over!! Love Maureen O’Hara in anything. And Brian Keith? Sexxxxy. if I come across any other RedBox codes I will pass them along, but this one will net you ONE free per credit card. So, if you have 4 credit cards, you can use it 4 times. Have fun!
This is somehow new to you? Remember the human girl who ‘fell in love’ with the angst-ridden goodlooking vampire? In a town with vampires and werewolves? Thinking Twilight? Not on a bet…..think Karry Swenson and Luke Perry in the original movie and later Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz on the television. Yep, if you guessed Buffy the Vampire Slayer you got it in one. There is nothing original in Hollyweird…and I mean NOTHING.
I agree with you, why do they make such remakes? because it costs less than paying for a new script….it is sick to think this is their budget cutting measures…..i mean really do we need to remake the great bonnie and clyde? they are with hilary duff as the lead. I suspect someone will try to remake “the way we were” and “flashdance” after all they did “fame” and do not get me started on TV just renamed british tv shows and nothing having any original content!
thanks for the red box tip, we have been meaning to try it!
i’ll join you on the picket line if they even talk about trying to remake the goonies. it’s right up there with the sound of music in my list of favorites.
and yeah, i love me so db sweeney.
of course, i meant SOME db sweeney. any db sweeney will do.
I have Ice Castles (orig) on vhs…its almost wore out. I can quote lines…so there I confessed!
I agree, I am so waiting for Hollywood to wow me with something new. They are remaking everything these days and they aren’t necessarily better. One that I am perplexed about of late is The Karate Kid. Will Smith’s son Jaden will star as “the new Danielson” but his name isn’t Daniel. Anyway, It sounds interesting but how can you have a Karate Kid without Mr. Magi? Or for that matter, how can you remake it without a hunky teen star like Ralph Macchio?
I do have to say that I am kinda excited to see Alice in Wonderland, though.
I am scared of the new Alice in Wonderland. Depp scared me enough in WIlly Wonka…so you go watch it, then come back here and tell me if i will have 3 months of nightmares for seeing it myself! :0)
Guess what else they are remaking. They are suppose to be remaking Karate Kid. Like you said…officially out of ideas.
Kristen, I saw that. With Will Smith’s kid as the Karate Kid. Huh? That’s just weird. Me no likey. Ralph is the one and only Karate Kid.
The Cutting Edge was one of the first DVDs I bought when we first got a DVD player! I HAD to have it. Moira Kelly was just gorgeous, and I love D.B. Sweeney in anything.
You nailed Hollywood smack dab on the head. Why they ruin classics is beyond me. You should give screenwriting a try! It’s not hard, there’s formats that do the hard typesetting stuff. There’s enough books out there that explains it in a nutshell. It’s a format. If you have the gift of snappy dialogue, which you do, can figure out plot lines and sub plot lines, and have a story worth telling, go for it! I mean anyone with your Martha experiences has more than enough story content.
Oh, you’re a funny one, Vicki. I’ll be right on top of that one! :0)
