Intro to Cake Decorating…My First Students!

in Cake Class

On Saturday, I had my first experience teaching a group of fine ladies a little bit about cake decorating.  For those of you who actually decorate for a living, you know that the learning really comes from DOING (over, and over, and OVER) but a nice introductory course is a great way to get started.  Hopefully everyone learned enough to go home and put to practice a few new tricks (icing borders, mousse fillings, roses, stars, etc.) so that they can make their cakes a little fancier when it comes time to take something to a church social or bake their kids a birthday cake.cakeclasscakes

We also touched on ways to fancy up cupcakes – something that should be in every Mom’s repertoire – because everyone knows that the “cool moms” bring the funkiest cupcakes. It just takes a tiny bit more effort to reach the”Cool Mom” status…so worth it!

I was really impressed with my students creations – I was not a WIlton nazi that forced everyone to make the same thing – and most importantly, I was impressed with how each of them was so adept at trying things themselves. They were so independent!  I would be helping one person with a shell border, and over in the corner I had gals making roses or writing before I even got back over to them – how awesome is that?

Of the seven students I had in class, most will be joining be for next months course where we learn about fondant, how to do a few tricks with chocolate, and a little bit of sugar work. Nothing drastic, but a LOT of fun to learn and the best part is getting to PLAY!cakeclass1

If any of you ladies are reading, I’d love for you to leave a comment and let me know what YOU took from the class. Positive or negative, I want to hear it all!

Thanks so much!

For those of you in the area who are interested in taking a Cake Decorating Course, please let me know. There is a tab over on the scroll bar where you can email me…my March 27th Class is full, but I have had interest from several people so I would be willing to set up as many classes as necessary to get all of you in – I just need to know how many!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend – and GO USA HOCKEY!!

Aww they all look so good. Our women’s ministry were wanting to learn cake decorating. Hopefully one day we will get to. I wish I lived close enough to take your class, I would so enjoy it. I always want to do a fondant cake. I guess I should just practice.

Oh forgot to mention that I once got the cool mom award. I made camouflage cupcakes. They were professional, but the kids sure seemed to rave about them. It was for my daughter’s best friend. He had to move away due to his dad being in the military.

I enjoyed making a rose. I always wondered how it was done and now I know. I also am happy that I learned how to jazz up cupcakes so that they won’t be “mommy cupcakes” anymore. I also enjoyed meeting new people and having some “me time”. Thanks a lot. If you do another fondant class I would be interested in that.

I would love love love to take a class with you. I took the wilton class 1, and part of 2 then i dropped out. I am not a fan of flowers. I need practice with my writing and borders and new ideas in a helpful friendly environment not a pushy, I am better than you one. I have a feeling I am too far away from you though. I am in Alexandria, VA. How far away from SW VA is that?
